Monti 1999 Barolo "Bussia" 90
The 1999 Barolo Bussiais the first Barolo Monti has made, and it is unquestionably a success.
A firm medium garnet, its plum and liquorice nose, rendered more complex by oak spices, shows finesse and length and the palate is equally elegant with sweet and spicy fruit, satin tannins and ample volume and persistence.
With a bit less oak, this wine would show more varietal character and the overall balance would improve. This is good grape, worth having confidence in.
Monti 1999 "Dossi Rossi" 90
A surprise for me was the outstanding 1999 Dossi Rossi, a blend of 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Nebbiolo from the fame Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba.
It boasts a dense, sweet nose of cherry cough syrup intermixed with cassis, licorice, Asian spices and cedar.
Full-bodied and opulent, this impressive 1999 should drink well for 6-8 years.
Monti 1998 Barbera d'Alba 89
This dark ruby/purple-colored, flamboyant Barbera offers aromas of exotic sweet new oak intermixed with jammy black fruits, coconuts and dried herbs.
Full-bodied and loaded with concentrated fruit, it lacks complexity, but delivers plenty of hedonism in its plush personality. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. (Robert Parker)
Monti 1997 Barbera d'Alba 90+
Sadly, there are only 100 cases of this internationally-styled, blockbuster Barbera.
Produced from exeptionally ripe fruit and low yields, and aged in new French oak, this monster-sized wine boasts an opaque black/purple color, as well as sumptuous aromas of over-ripe cherries, strawberries, licorice and pain grillè.
Thick, huge, massive and layared, with a finish that lasts over 30 seconds, this low acid, impressive wine can be drunk now, or aged for a decade. (Robert Parker)
